Singapore announces solar power feeding

Singapore announced its solar power feeding into retail electric grid for the first time on Monday, which aims to cut emissions as well as prepare for a completely liberalize electricity market.

Singapore is considered as one of the sunniest cities worldwide, and the majority of its powers is generated from imported natural gas, along with a solar fuelling less than 1 percent.

Rooftop solar panels in Germany and Japan has helped its capacity to massively increase, as well as bring record levels of renewable energy into the power mix.

Ahead of the Singapore’s plan, commercial and industrial power users are able to acquire solar-generated power mainly from the power grid. The power is generated by means of the rooftop solar panels, which is owned and run by Singapore’s Sun Electric – a first solar firm that was given an electricity retail license and was later announced during an event held by Sun Electric as well as Energy Market Authority, the electricity regulator of Singapore.

Building owners can approve placing the Sun Electric panels within their sites, while the power generated can be sold to the electric grid.

The EMA chairman Loh Khum Yean said, "The EMA will continue its efforts to facilitate the entry of independent electricity retailers,"

In the mid-year of 2018, Singapore plans to completely liberalize its electricity retail market.

The installed photovoltaic capacity of Singapore rallied about 1.5 megawatt in 2009 to 43.8 MW in 2015’s year-end. It suggests that it’s just enough to power about 14,000 four-room flats.

According to EMA, the government plans to boost its capacity to 350 MW by the year 2020, or about 5 percent of forecasted peak electricity demand, which now rallied with less than 1 percent.

In December, Singapore assured to cut emissions intensity by about 36 percent from 2005 levels by the year 2030.

Singapore’s power grid

Among seven local SMEs, The Chope Group, including Pilatique, Seagift and Sky Tower on Sentosa has been given a solar energy through Sun Electric’s energy generators on the rooftop of JTC in Tuas South.

Sun Electric, which was the first energy firm to acquire an electricity retail license announced its first live solar-generated electricity distribution on Monday among its local customers via the Republic’s power grid.

The Sun Electric’s first clean energy products officially launched on Monday under its program SolarSpace – a platform that enables a consumer to purchase a solar energy even it is located in metropolitan cities like Singapore and solar panels can be installed even if they do not have their own roof.

Four tailored SolarSpace platform packages include SolarFlex, SolarLite, SolarPeak and Solar100. It differs depending on the blend of the clean energy essential to the individual consumers.

The Sun Electric CEO Dr. Matthew Peloso said, "Our programme allows rooftop owners to capture sunlight striking their roofs, and sell it to energy consumers in their city," He added, "Smaller consumers of energy, such as SMEs, can now do their part for the environment and sustainability by adopting clean energy. Our programme was developed to change the way cities obtain energy, and to allow cities to harness clean energy that can be obtained from their environment."
