GE is to relocate in Boston led by poor tax policy

A state’s business tax climate experience pressure when a major employer to a neighboring state also referred as “Taxachusetts” is being chased, where Connecticut now finds itself. General Electric Co (GE) recently announced on January 14 its relocation of its global headquarters from Fairfield, Conn. to Boston, Mass. It appears that an example of how a tax policy, and the electoral results which direct it, are critical to the economic health of a state and competitiveness.

The current chairman of the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) of Connecticut, Gov. Dannel Malloy, was reelected in 2014. He made a pledge that taxes will not be raised if he will be elected in the second term. Therefore, it is a reasonable commitment to voters as over the last seven years, President Obama imposed more than 20 federal tax increase. Malloy, on the other hand, piled an amount of $1.9 billion state tax hike amid his first year term in 2011.

Withstanding the issue, the GE is to leave Connecticut wherein politicians can’t demand they weren’t informed beforehand. During the course of 2015’s first half, GE and other companies constantly informed Malloy and Democrats that run the state legislature that if they start raising taxes, or mainly move to a unitary tax, the GE’s job-creating capacity will dropped along with other Connecticut companies. These companies will consider relocating instead to a state that is less hostile to their business. Now, the most storied companies in American history were to leave it so-called home Nutmeg State for more than four decades already brought by the unethical actions of Malloy and the Democratic legislators.

GE’s decision to move to Boston were not mainly by increased rates. Aaron Renn, the Manhattan Institute senior fellow stated certain explanations of some other significant factors, however, Massachusetts appears to have the advantage in levying a lower personal as well as corporate income tax rates compares to Connecticut. The Massachusetts corporate tax rate settled at 8.0, which is slightly lower over Connecticut’s 9.0 percent corporate tax. Nicole Kaeding a Tax Foundation economist mentioned how the Bay State’s greater tax advantage than Connecticut can be seen in its flat personal income tax.

“The large difference in the states is their individual income tax structure. General Electric employees, including those making the relocation decision, likely care about the tax rates that they pay personally. Connecticut’s individual income tax has seven brackets with rates as high as 6.99 percent. Massachusetts has a flat income tax at 5.1 percent.”

Gov. Malloy was now considered as one of the least popular governors in the country. GE’s force leave out of the state is his responsible role and is anticipated to constantly diminish what is his lowest approval rating alone. It’s unsightly for the DGA as certain battleground state candidates decline from associating with the DGA chairman and his policies in their states.
