Boeing Beats Airbus in Aircraft Sales and Delivery

Boeing guarded its spot as the top airplane manufacturer in the world for another year, transporting more jets than Airbus in 2015 by bringing a record number of airplanes as production move up persistently higher.

On Thursday, Boeing stated it delivered 762 jets last year and that is 39 additional aircraft than in 2014.                                                       

Boeing  also declared that in 2015, it had won 768 net firm orders on par with management projections, however, significantly lesser  than the sales Airbus booked.

Boeing’s jet trades, moderating after three prosperous years, lagged in two critical areas.

It sustained to trail Airbus by a wide margin in sales of the succeeding generation of single-aisle jets.

Except for the Airbus sales in December ,  these figures are still to come , the European jet manufacturer’s A320neo in 2015 had already won two-thirds of sales in that market against Boeing’s 737 MAX.


Additionally, Boeing didn’t sell sufficient current-model 777s to stay on track to keep production at existing levels.

That raises the probability of an announcement, immediately this year, that 777 productions in Everett will have to decrease.

No. 1 In Prodcution

Still the number one  in the production of  the planes distributed in 2015, 44 were 787 Dreamliners put together in North Charleston, S.C., according to Uresh Sheth, who tracks 787 production jet-by-jet on the All Things 787 blog.

The outstanding 718 aircraft supplied were all manufactured in Boeing’s Puget Sound-area factories.

The Renton labor force supplied a total 495 single-aisle 737s, 10 more than last year and one more record.

The Everett workers assembled 91 Dreamliners, plus 98 large widebody 777 jets, 18 jumbo jet 747s and 16 mid-size widebody 767 jets.

Until next week, Airbus will not issue its final distribution, however, it is clear the figure will not approach Boeing’s tally, since the European jet maker’s production lagged Boeing’s by over 150 supplies at the beginning of December.

In 2003, after the recession triggered by the Sept. 11 attacks, Airbus took the No. 1 crown from Boeing and retained it for nine years by supplying more airplanes through 2011.

However, in  2012 Boeing finally got production of the 787 Dreamliner going to recover the top position and has held it four straight years.

In a report, Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief Ray Conner commended the workforce for this strong performance.

“Our team did a fantastic job achieving higher deliveries and getting our products to our customers as quickly and efficiently as possible,” he stated.

Sales Fall Short

Nevertheless, in 2015, Airbus will securely win the sales race. At the end of November, Airbus sales chief John Leahy had already ordered 1,007 net firm orders, and his team usually adds hundreds more in a flurry of year-end orders.

In 2015, Boeing had net orders for 588 single-aisle 737 jets, including 409 of the forthcoming 737 MAX models.

Airbus in 2015 extended its strong sales lead in that market segment. Through November, Airbus had sold a net total 876 of its rival A320 family, that includes  822 of the forthcoming A320neo models.

Boeing also fell short of its sales target for its recent-model 777s.

Faced with expert predictions that Boeing will have to slash 777 production within the next  coming years, Boeing sales chief John Wojick previously stated he needs to sell 40 to 60 current-model 777s a year to preserve production at existing rates through the end of the decade and the introduction of the new 777X.


However in 2015, Boeing sold just 38 current-model 777s, lower from 63 in 2014.

Boeing narrowed that shortfall, on Thursday,  when it broadcasted a new firm order for six 777-300ERs, reserved in the first days of 2016.

In spite of the MAX and 777 misses, last year’s total net sales of 768 aircraft definitely is not bad.

Winning six more orders than planes transported, Boeing marginally extends its giant backlog, that ended the year at 5,795 jets.

Conner stated that’s enough to “ensure a steady stream of deliveries for years to come.”

He commented Boeing will continue to pay attention on keeping production humming, even as it get ready to supply three new jet models between 2017 and 2020: the 737 MAX, the 787-10 and the 777X.

“Our newest development products are on schedule,” said Conner. “We could not have accomplished all we did in 2015 without the support and hard work of our employees, suppliers, partners and the community.”

On Tuesday, Airbus will announce  its final 2015 sales and delivery figures.
